The Journey of a Woman’s Resolve: Empowering Ourselves and Each Other

The Journey of a Woman’s Resolve: Empowering Ourselves and Each Other

Growing up with my granny during my high school and college days, I vividly remember her as a graceful lady who knew how to manage household finances for a family of nine members. She had in-depth knowledge of music and ragas and sang beautifully. Her name was Muthulakshmi, and she grew up in Rangoon, Burma (Yangoon, Myanmar), receiving a convent education with a good command of the English language. She would narrate the stories of the Ramayana and Mahabharata, moral stories, and life lessons over and over again. I had always wondered why she never ventured out to have a career of her own, her dreams that were never realized because of the rigid gender roles that confined her. As she spoke her dreams, her eyes sparkled with a mix of nostalgia and a hint of regret. It was a transformative moment for me; I realized that empowerment isn’t just a personal achievement but a legacy we build for those who follow.

This Women’s Day, under the theme “Accelerate Action,” let’s reflect on how we, as women, can drive positive change not only for ourselves but also for the community around us. Here are practical steps we can embrace:

Personal Development and Empowerment

– **Educate Yourself**: Dive into books and articles about women’s rights and gender equality. Awareness is the first step towards change.

– **Build Your Skills**: Enhance your career by learning new skills through courses and workshops.

– **Set Clear Goals**: Outline your objectives, break them into actionable steps, and celebrate every small victory.

– **Practice Self-Care**: Remember, taking care of your mind and body isn’t a luxury—it’s essential.

Professional Growth

– **Seek Mentorship**: Connect with mentors and sponsors who can offer guidance and open doors for you.

– **Network Actively**: Engage in events and platforms where you can meet allies and gain diverse insights.

– **Advocate for Yourself**: Don’t shy away from seeking what you deserve—be it a raise or recognition.

– **Lead by Example**: Show dedication and integrity in your work, inspiring other women to do the same.

Community Engagement

– **Join Support Groups**: There’s immense power in community. Participate in networks that foster mutual support.

– **Volunteer**: Lend your skills to causes that support women’s empowerment.

– **Mentor Young Women**: Your journey could light the way for someone else. Share your insights and encouragement generously.

Advocacy and Awareness

– **Speak Up**: Raise your voice to highlight issues of gender inequality and inspire others to do the same.

– **Challenge Bias**: When you see discrimination or bias, call it out and foster a culture of fairness.

– **Support Women-owned Businesses**: Economic empowerment is key. Opt to buy from women-led enterprises.

Family and Social Life

– **Encourage Gender Equality at Home**: Advocate for shared responsibilities to model a balanced life for the next generation.

– **Inspire the Next Generation**: Show the young women and girls in your life that their dreams have no bounds.

Continuous Learning and Adaptation

– **Stay Informed**: Keep abreast of the latest in gender equality and adapt your strategies to serve your goals better.

According to a 2020 report by McKinsey, advancing women’s equality could add $12 trillion to global growth. Imagine the impact if each of us takes small steps towards this goal. This Women’s Day, let’s pledge to empower ourselves and each other, because when women support women, incredible things happen.
